Students have a whale of a time

You could be forgiven for thinking our renowned whale watching season has come early this year. A giant, brightly coloured whale named Kondoli is coming to town from March 2012 as part of Just Add Water, the Regional Centre of Culture.

Kondoli (the Ngarrindjeri/Ramindjeri word for whale) will be a magnificent inflatable storytelling space catering for up to 50 children at a time.

Especially created for Just Add Water, the design and construction of Kondoli is currently under way. Local schools are working with multi award-winning community artists Bob Daly and Kalyna Micenko from SpinFX Australia to create the art work that will make Kondoli.

Students will design and construct large colourful triangular panels made up of images of local flora and fauna. They start by drawing an image which they then transfer onto the material. With the help of teachers and parents as well as local sewing groups, the images are then appliquéd onto the panels and pieced together.
