Nukunu Welcome to Country film launch

Join us for the historic launch of the new, locally-made Nukunu Welcome to Country film at the Northern Festival Centre.

This minute-long film will be played before all cinema screenings and theatre performances where practicable at the Arts Centre to acknowledge the Nukunu community.

“Welcomes to and Acknowledgements of Country, in any form they take, give the wider community an awareness of the traditional Aboriginal owners of the land,” said Country Arts SA’s Chief Executive Officer, Steve Saffell.

“This is the third of such films Country Arts SA has produced in recent years in close consultation and collaboration with local communities around the state as a significant way of recognising the continuing connection Traditional Owners have to Country.”

The Nukunu Welcome to Country project was filmed and produced by Aboriginal Cinematographer Allan Collins and Kym Hamann assisted by Nukunu film student Anil Junior Samy in a film attachment role, as part of the objective was to provide professional development to aspiring Aboriginal filmmakers where possible.

Cultural consultants Beth and Desmond Turner led the process of filming on country, determining relevant film locations such as Baroota and the Port Germein region and were fundamental in writing and recording the script.

The first Welcome to Country film by Country Arts SA was made in 2016 in the Riverland, where it premiered at the Chaffey Theatre. The second was the Barngarla Acknowledgement of Country film which premiered in Whyalla last year. All three films were filmed and produced by Allan Collins and Kym Hamann.

The free film will be launched by Kirsty Parker, Director Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation alongside Nukunu elders Beth and Desmond Turner, followed by supper and musical entertainment prior to a performance from contemporary Indigenous band, B2M with their show Mamanta, for which tickets are available online.
