The town of Lucindale, in the state’s south-east may be small in population, but is big in community spirit as many of the locals got together to support a youth driven project to revamp the town’s Skate Park.
In early 2010, young people from the community voiced a desire for a skate park. Local community groups and the resident policeman jumped on the idea and successfully fundraised with the towns young people – writing grants and submitting designs – resulting in the completion of the park in January 2012.
During the school holidays and in celebration of National Youth Week, artist and local art teacher JoJo Spook ran workshops in design, the use of paint and how to install panels for permanent display at the Lucindale Skate Park. All young people were invited to contribute to the theme of “living in lucindale”.
Participants were also responsible for the documentation of the project through photographic images, media releases, use of modern technology and social media networks.
They will also coordinate the official unveiling of the panels, inviting community members and official sponsors to attend the celebration. The young people will be asked to speak of their experience and the journey undertaken to realize their final piece.
Sponsors for this project include Country Arts SA, SAPOL, Blue Light Disco, Naracoorte Lucindale council, Lucindale lions club, Lucindale Football Club, Lucindale Post Office, Volunteers Kerena Simpson, Janet Conroy and Carol Miller.
