C’mon Fellas let’s support our boys to do some manly dance in Western Eyre!

Streaky Bay’s Instep dance group are looking for some men to gather around their boys 6 years and older to support them as they man up for dance.  No dance skills are necessary for this volunteer job; just a passion for helping out and a desire to assist young people to reach their full potential.

The Kicking it from the Kerb project aims to ‘take the dance to the boys and not the boys to the dance’.  Instep Dance will use innovation and ‘out there thinking’, to re-engage, encourage, enable and empower young boys aged 6 years and over to take up dance.

Dance momentum has been building in Western Eyre ever since the Country Arts SA dance initiative D’n’A was launched in the region in 2009.   In 2012 Instep joined forces with other community stakeholders to deliver the successful Intensive UpSkill Project with funding from Country Arts SA and Arts SA.

Seventy six young people participated in the project and a smaller group of ten, dedicated boys are now ready to go to the next level.  Instep felt that more could be done to support these and other boys in dance and so Kicking it from the Kerb was born.

A Carclew Youth Arts grant of $2000 has been awarded for the project development phase and $4,500 from Country Arts SA,  Community Projects category.  Some of these funds will go towards supporting the visits of professional dancers to the region.  Greg Potticary, a b-boy and hip-hop performer and Chan Griffin a Capoeira dancer will be the first to lead workshops in early April.

Instep is asking for a few dads to spend some time to support their lads to try something active and different.  The promise is there won’t be a pirouette in sight!
