Goolwa comes alive on Sunday 10 March with two great shows – Nick Parnell’s astonishing percussion virtuosity to open the 2013 Centenary Hall at 3pm Season and the Adelaide Fringe Caravan at the Wharf from 11:30am – 2:30pm
With his new show World Rhythms, Nick Parnell takes the audience on an exotic musical journey, from the passion of the tango, to the beats of Brazil, featuring the earthy sounds of marimba, vibraphone and pulsating drums. Nick will be joined by vocalist Joy Hague to bring you some beautiful traditional African spirituals.

Nick has always loved the music of Africa, and after seeing Joy perform with The Idea of North, Nick knew right away she would be the perfect fit for this project. He says, “The marimba has a strong connection to Africa, so it is the ideal accompaniment to the much-loved vocally-driven spiritual songs, and Joy has the perfect voice to blend with marimba”. Joy too is looking forward to the performance, saying “I’ve long enjoyed Nick’s performances. They are incredibly dynamic and moving”.
Nick’s South Australian tour comes off the back of the UK release of his ABC Classics albums and a sell out performance with concert pianist Simon Tedeschi .
Nick & Joy will also present and demo session at 1pm prior to the show and schools performances on Tuesday 12 March.
At the Fringe Caravan are Ireland’s hilarious dance troupe Ponydance, winners of the ‘Best Dance’ category in the 2012 Adelaide Fringe Awards, with their sharp dance moves and even sharper comedic timing.
Bring a rug and settle in on the grass at Jaralde Park at the Goolwa Wharf as Strongman Goran (Sam McMahon) hosts the event while he searches the crowd for a husband for his hoola-hooping sister Nataska (Eloise Green) with juggler and street theatre artist Grant Goldie from the UK, and Mr Spin, whose comic vaudevillian style circus and juggling act is nothing short of phenomenal.
Adelaide Fringe Director Greg Clarke said, “We’re really excited to be bringing Fringe in Goolwa back for a second year as it was such a fun event for both the audience and the artists. It was great to see so many families really make a day of it and we’re sure that with the line-up we’ve programmed this year, everyone will have an equally brilliant time,” Mr Clarke said.
Country Arts SA’s Executive Producer for Just Add Water Jo Pike said, “It’s fantastic that major organisations like the Adelaide Fringe want to return to Goolwa after the amazing response in 2012 and a real bonus for local tourism, especially at this time of year.”
