About

Delight in the sounds and magic of the festive season with the 20-piece Big Band from the Band of the South Australia Police as they present “A Swingin’ Christmas” — a spectacular performance of Christmas favourites brought to life with the energy, style, and sophistication of a classic swing orchestra.

Featuring sultry vocals, soaring brass, smooth saxophones, and a powerhouse rhythm section, this high-energy performance blends timeless holiday classics with the unmistakable sound of the big band era.

A feature of the performance will be a brilliant re-imagining of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s beloved Christmas ballet, “The Nutcracker Suite”, that has been transformed into a vibrant big band jazz masterpiece, originally recorded by jazz legends Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn.

Bursting with swinging rhythms, rich brass harmonies, and inventive orchestration, the suite blends the elegance of the original classical themes with the unmistakable sound and sophistication of the jazz era.

From the playful energy of “Peanut Brittle Brigade” to the sultry groove of “Sugar Rum Cherry,” the Ellington Nutcracker Suite delivers a festive concert experience that is both timeless and thrilling — a perfect showcase for the power and colour of a modern big band.

From toe-tapping swing arrangements to heartwarming festive melodies and vocals, “A Swingin Christmas” promises an unforgettable experience of music, celebration, and Christmas cheer for audiences of all ages.
