Art and a Healthier Life

The South East Regional Community Health Service (SERCHS) and the Limestone Coast Migrant Resource Centre (LCMRC) partnered in 2012 to initiate  a healthy eating and physical activity program.

South Australian Visual Artist, Daniel Connell worked with community members in Mount Gambier, Naracoorte, Lobethal, Murray Bridge and the Riverland to assist them to identify and express their thoughts about health through art.

Country Health SA in partnership with the University of South Australia’s Human Rights and Security Cluster, funded similar projects around the state and the works emerging from each project have been collated into a published storybook ‘Together Here for a Healthier Life; improving migrant health in regional South Australia‘.

The workshops and artworks helped participants,  to engage with the abstract question – ‘what makes a healthy life’,  to express their own perspective, to feel honored as an individual  through portrait making and to explore a potential career path in the arts.

The program assisted participants to create a book and an exhibition which will challenge our understanding  about who makes up the community,  raise our awareness of the changing face of rural Australia and remind  us  all, that making healthy life choices is grounded in a sense of belonging.

The storybook and artwork will be launched on  Sunday 21 July and the exhibition will run for 2 weeks in the foyer of The Main Corner, Mt Gambier.
