Who are these three well known Australians?  The portrait titled Three Well Known Australians by Martin Shaw has been posing this question to gallery viewers since it began touring in 1983.  The clues are in the painting but artist Martin Shaw won’t reveal the answer.  What can be revealed though, is the black and white dog, sitting in the corner of the canvas is named ‘Pea’.

The mystery of the identities of the three figures in the painting has inspired many guesses by members of the public throughout the years.  Guesses as to the identity of the Three Well Known Australians are recorded in ‘year books’ which are displayed alongside the painting.  These guesses often reflect and reveal trends and values in the communities that the exhibition travels to.

Visitors can search through the year books and are invited to record their own suggestions of the identiy of the mystery figures.  This is a great opportunity to have your name recorded in a unique, historicol document.

Three Well Known Australians will be on display

Where:  Streaky Bay Visitor Information Centre Gallery, 21 Bay Road

When:  July to Friday August 9.    Monday to Friday 9am – 12:30pm and 1:30 – 5pm.

The exhibition is made possible with the support of Country Arts SA and the District Council of Streaky Bay.
