The Skies that Bind Us, Kate Gorringe-Smith, example of stencilling method for workshopIn 2013, with the support of BirdLife Australia, Kate Gorringe-Smith initiated a print exchange for artists along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway – the route travelled twice annually by Australia’s migratory shorebirds, to and from their breeding grounds above the arctic circle.
The exhibition explores the migration of several species of birds that fly from Siberia to spend summer on our coastline. The birds make this journey six to eight times during their lifetime and it has been estimated that the distance would measure from here to the moon.
The exchange had two parts: the creation of a print folio for each participant, and an exhibition of these prints. The exhibition features two sets of prints: one pristine, and one which has been posted along the Flyway, unprotected, to follow the birds’ journeys from New Zealand to Alaska and back. The resulting weathering and wearing of the prints will echo the wear to the birds’ plumage, calling to mind the challenges that these tiny creatures face year after year.
Kate will be holding a print workshop in July prior to the exhibition, returning in September with an opening talk in support of the exhibition.
