Sydney Dance Company return to regional SA

Some of the world’s best dancers will be coming to regional South Australia next month with the Sydney Dance Company’s wildly powerful double bill, Frame of Mind.

Frame of Mind features the smash hit Wildebeest by South Australia’s own Gabrielle Nankivell and the multi award-winning Frame of Mind from Rafael Bonachela. Following its premiere in Sydney Dance Company’s inaugural New Breed season, choreographic prodigy Gabrielle Nankivell’s eloquent Wildebeest showcases the power of dancers as individuals and strength en masse. Moody and animalistic, it’s backed by a stormy and industrial score by Luke Smiles.

“I’m really looking forward to sharing my work with the people across regional SA,” said choreographer, Gabrielle Nankivell.

“I grew up on a property in the hills behind Willunga and still have a strong connection with the countryside. The work draws inspiration from the power of instinct, forces of nature and the relationship between animal, human and machine – elements very much in play in this part of the world.”

Wildebeest has been nominated for the Helpmann Awards including Gabrielle Nankivell for ‘Best Choreography in a Ballet, Dance or Physical Theatre Production’ and Bernhard Knauer for ‘Best Male Dancer in a Ballet, Dance or Physical Theatre Production’.

Bonachela’s Frame of Mind features a dramatic contemporary-classical soundtrack by Bryce Dessner (from American hit rock band The National), recorded by San Francisco’s virtuosic Kronos Quartet. It won all four categories for the 2015 Helpmann Awards including ‘Best Choreography’, ‘Best Dance Work’, ‘Best Male Dancer’, and ‘Best Female Dancer’ for its critically acclaimed premiere season.

Paul Roberts, spokesperson of Country Arts SA’s principal corporate partner, SA Power Networks, said:
“The Sydney Dance Company is consistently outstanding. This time you get two works for the price of one. Frame of Mind is critically acclaimed and has won multiple awards, and we also get the chance to see Wildebeest, the smash hit from South Australian choreographer, Gabrielle Nankivell.”
