Shaylee Makes the Grade

2013 Riverland Youth Theatre (RYT) FreshMeet young artists mentoring program recipient Shaylee Kassulke (16) was selected in a highly competitive field of young singers and dancers to participate in the Class of Cabaret, part of the 2013 Adelaide Cabaret Festival. Thirty of the most talented music and drama students from secondary schools across South Australia gathered for workshops to hone their craft in singing and performance with industry professionals including Kate Ceberano.

RYT’s FreshMeet Mentoring Program is an individually tailored young artist development program to help regional young people aged 14-26 to take the next step towards a professional career in the arts. Artists work with RYT’s Artistic Director Olivia Allen throughout the year of their mentorship receiving regular consultation sessions, invitations to specific industry development opportunities, notification and assistance with grant applications and professional development with visiting artists.

“We really believe in creating opportunities for young people to control their own development. The funding provided through Country Arts SA’s skills development grants has given the FreshMeet mentoring program greater potential for young people to do this,” says RYT’s Artistic Director Olivia Allen. “Young people given support can achieve spectacular things. But the right support at the right time is fundamental to lasting success.”

Shaylee will continue to pursue her passion of music theatre through the FreshMeet mentoring program through singing and dance lessons.
