Limestone Coast Symphony Orchestra Returns

Two Performances – Naracoorte and Mt Gambier

In June 2013, the newly established Limestone Coast Symphony Orchestra burst upon the local music scene with a highly successful Gala Concert.  Led by internationally trained conductor, Angus Christie, the orchestra has been granted the first artistic residency of the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre for its upcoming 2014 season.

A very significant outcome from the LCSO forming last year is Dr Christopher Waite, a mature age music student who is specialising in composition, attended many rehearsals last season and forged a relationship with the orchestra. He was invited to compose an orchestral piece for the 2014 season by conductor, Angus Christie.

Through attending the LCSO rehearsals and performances last year, Chris felt that he was in an excellent position to compose a contemporary orchestral work for the musicians of the LCSO. With the assistance of Regional Arts Fund Step Up grant, the score has now been written and Chris attends all rehearsals to assist and collaborate with the interpretation of the score. As time goes on, he fine tunes any of the areas of the composition that require attention and will reproduce a final mark up.

Once again the LCSO were extremely fortunate in securing the services of Angus Christie as Conductor. Angus Christie began his studies of conducting at Melbourne University, on completing his degree he studied for a further three years in Vienna, at the Vienna Academy and later at the Conservatorium of the City in Vienna.

Angus was the Musical Director of the University of Oslo Symphony Orchestra and the University of Bergen Symphony Orchestra for eight years, and also taught Orchestral Conducting at the University of Oslo. Some major performances of his include Bartok‘s Concerto for Orchestra, Stravinsky‘s Rite of Spring, Berlioz Symphony Fantastique and the first performance in Norway of Scriabin‘s First Symphony.

Angus returned to Australia in 2001, and resides in the Western Districts of Victoria. As well as conducting the newly formed Limestone Coast Symphony orchestra, Angus also conducts orchestras in Hamilton, Ballarat and Warrnambool.

The ten weeks  of rehearsals with Conductor Angus Christie,  funded through the Country Arts SA Regional Arts Fund will culminate in two performances:  Naracoorte Town Hall and at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre.
