Country Arts SA is calling for applications from artists from all disciplines across Australia for the prestigious Grindell’s Hut Artist-in-Residence program in the heart of the breathtaking Vulkathunha – Gammon Ranges National Park in the Northern Flinders Ranges, South Australia.
Established more than 20 years ago, this highly regarded residency offers one artist the chance to spend three weeks immersed in the extraordinary natural beauty of the Vulkathunha – Gammon Ranges National Park. The park forms part of the traditional Country of the Adnyamathanha people and is rich with cultural significance. It’s also a haven for many rare and endangered plants and animals.
Country Arts SA Chief Executive Anthony Peluso said the Grindell’s Hut Residency says the residency provides more than just a space for creativity – it’s a transformative experience.
“The Grindell’s Hut residency allows artists to fully immerse themselves in their creative journey. Situated on Adnyamathanha country, it offers a profound, transformative experience where the land and its ancient stories become integral to the artistic process,” he says. “This residency is more than just a space to create; it’s a chance to reconnect, reflect, and be inspired by the environment around you.”
Open to artists of all disciplinesand at any stage of their careers, the residency welcomes proposals from those working in visual arts, writing, poetry, dance, music, sound art, scriptwriting, and more.
Country Arts SA Visual Arts Manager Lauren Mustillo says Grindell’s Hut stands out as a truly unique opportunity in the Australian arts landscape.
“The residency’s setting, combined with the expertise and enthusiasm of the on-site Park Ranger team, creates an environment where the creative possibilities are limitless,” she says.
Last year’s Grindell’s Hut Artist in Residence Julie Stoneman, from Tasmania, described the residency as a powerful few weeks for her practice.
“My love of rocks and awe of the earth’s complex geology intensified while walking through the arid and ancient landscapes of the Adnyamathanha people,” she says. “Somehow something deep shifted within me, and my approach to my practice is changing. My new work will resonate with the experience of quietly holding the rocks and feeling a sense of sanctuary within the shadows. “It has been a powerful immersion that l hope to carry within me forever.”
Applications close at 5pm on Tuesday, June 24. One artist nationwide will be selected to take part in the residency program which will run from October 7-27.
