FREE Capoeira workshops

Image: Capoeira dancers

In June most people in the remote, rural towns of Western Eyre are looking to the skies hopeful for winter rains.  Not so in Streaky Bay and Ceduna where loads of young boys are eyes down and busy practising moves in anticipation of more dance – just for boys!

Boys will be lining up when Chan Griffin brings his stylish power and grace to deliver Capoeira (a form of martial arts combined with dance and music) as part of the Kicking it from the Kerb boys dance project.

FREE dance workshops will be delivered over three days from Monday June 24 to Wednesday June 26.

The Kicking it from the Kerb boys dance project has been attracting much attention and praise from parents for “taking the dance to the boys not the boys to the dance”.  Using innovation and “out there thinking” the project team has been proactive in the region encouraging and empowering young boy’s ages 6 years and over to engage in dance.

In May BBoy Dreaded (Greg Potticary) delivered the second round of high powered workshops in BBoying (which incorporates BBoying elements including breaking).  A boy’s mentee group in Streaky Bay has really stepped up leading from the front to form a boy’s dance crew and start developing routines.  The mentees even got to deliver an impromptu dance lesson in an unplanned workshop alongside their mentor Greg Potticary to some delighted reception students at the Streaky Bay Area School.  Flexibility and “expecting the unexpected” is part of the criteria for the project.   With an ethos that allows those boys who participate to make their own decisions around their dance experience, the project will acheive many positive outcomes.
