Voices combine

Desert Voices Choir from Port Augusta and the Caltowie Harmony Chorus spent a weekend in early May singing and learning new songs from each others repertoires.  Each chorus performed a song before teaching the arrangement to the other choir.  All songs were arranged in three and four part harmonies.

Saturday afternoon the combined groups were able to revisit songs from two previous shared workshops.  These songs provide the beginning basis for “polecats.”   Polecats, meaning songs that can be sung and performed when the choirs get together.  The traditional meaning apparently is from the red and white pole found outside barbershops.  Kym John music director for the Caltowie Harmony Chorus brought a wealth of barbershop experience to the group along with the quirky terminology.

Saturday evening was spent in Caltowie where members from each chorus participated in a Karaoke experience at the Hotel.

On Sunday the Desert Voices conducted by music Director Anna Beach, performed at Blesing’s Garden where several Caltowie Harmony Chorus members were invited to join in for a couple of songs.  The entire weekend was a fabulous experience for those involved, providing opportunities to strengthen contacts, share the joy of singing and make plans for further vocal workshops.

Anyone from the Southern Flinders who interested in singing, enjoys a challenge and is committed to learning three and four part harmonies contact:
