Case Study: Warna – Tide Before Time – Sonya Coleman’s Country to Couture DAAF 2024

Project Summary

Lead artist Sonya Coleman participated in Country to Couture (C2C) to present her first clothing collection at the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair (DAAF) in 2024. Sonya created a robust support network for the ongoing development of her garment and textile collection, working with a network of mentors at every phase of the project.

Sonya’s work draws inspiration from her family’s intimate connection to the tides and cycles of the sea. With her mother, daughters, and community involved in the creative process, her designs speak to heritage and harmony with the natural world. Her dream? A swimwear collection that celebrates all women and respects the waters they swim in.

Project Type – Professional development for artists and arts workers
Artform – Fashion
Amount Funded – $7,400
Primary Beneficiary – Artists and arts workers

From the Artist

“The project began with a question of “I’d Love to Explore Textile Design”. A project that began as an idea, that has brought so many experiences, and a sense of satisfaction. I feel so lucky to have worked alongside Melanie and Amna and I was fortunate to work alongside my Mum (Eleanor Coleman), and then also do a three Generational Collaboration.

The opportunity to present at a National Event has made such an impact, not only on me, but on my whole family. To globally collaborate with Melanie Sarantou and Amna Qureshi has been so rewarding, I cannot contain my excitement and sense of achievement. Assisting in showcasing my family of Generational Artists, and their talent.

The collection submitted and on the runway, was the only one successful from South Australia. I am absolutely amazed to be a state representative in First Nations Fashion. Family Members continue to flourish in their chosen Art field. Given Ceduna’s location, we are aware that we are a considerable distance from major cities… This did not stop the project; everything was done via phone, emails and Zoom. We found a way, and we did it. The National event was held in Darwin and I had to travel to it. Unforgettable Experience.”

Public Outcomes

Audiences were engaged with those that attended Country to Couture 2024, Media via SBS and NITV, Social Media ABC Eyre Peninsula, Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair Foundation, Indigenous Fashion Projects. My community engagement is the representation of all our designs. They represent home, the Far West Coast of South Australia.

“Audience participants were people that are in the Fashion Industry and those that love Wearable Art. They attended the show, or and had the opportunity to watch online and across socials. I have learnt that the storytelling of the collection and the collaboration process, was where most questions were raised when engaging with the audience. They absolutely loved it! High praises were met everywhere!” Sonya Coleman – Designer
