Port Augusta’s Malka Aboriginal Art Prize On Display

Port Augusta’s annual Malka Aboriginal Art Prize is on display until 25 July at the Port Augusta Cultural Centre – Yarta Purtli.

The exhibition features both traditional and contemporary artwork from artists based across the North of the state, including Port Augusta, Whyalla, Port Lincoln, Port Pirie and, for the first time, also the Yorke Peninsula.

Malka was established in 2010 and over the years has become an important Indigenous arts event on the Port Augusta calendar.  It is so named because Malka is a word used by a number of Aboriginal language groups within the Port Augusta region and, it means ‘mark, painting’ etc.

Importantly, the Art Prize is scheduled to coincide with NAIDOC Week each year and it provides an opportunity to celebrate Indigenous art and culture in regional South Australia.

Art Prize winners will be announced during NAIDOC Week.

For further information about the exhibition, contact Port Augusta based Arts Officer, Ellenor Day-Lutz on (08) 8641 9175 or contact your local Arts Officer.
