14 South Australian community arts projects supported through Regional Arts Fund Grants

Minister for the Arts, Senator the Hon Mitch Fifield, has announced $147,621 from the Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund to support 14 new community arts projects right across regional South Australia.

Commencing after 1 January 2016, the successful projects include everything from dance programs and ceramics workshops in prison to translating and recording songs in language to visual arts projects and professional development opportunities for artists with a learning disability.

“It’s fantastic to see the broad range of creative enterprises applying for funding through the Regional Arts Fund growing with each round,” said Country Arts SA Chief Executive Officer, Mr Steve Saffell.

“It really goes to show what creative minds and collaborations we have in our regional South Australian communities. I’d encourage everyone to support projects in regions near them if they can!”

Seven first-time applicants from around the state were successful in this round of funding. Many of the projects provide workshops for up-skilling community members and three provide opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Successful initiatives in the latest round of funding include:

Mid-North Knowledge Partnership – Creative in Residence with the Mid-North Knowledge Partnership, Sue Michael, will work with three small communities in the Mid-North, using visual arts as an innovative research process to engage with each community to capture stories of rural life.

Tutti Arts Inc – In the lead up to the 2016 Sit-Down Shut-Up&Watch Film Festival, New Media and Filmmaking workshops will be held in four regions that will be delivered by artists with a learning disability, to participants with a learning disability.

Yalata Community Inc – Yalata Community Band and community members will collaborate with singer/songwriter Johnny Lovett to create new songs for the Yalata Band and to translate to Pitjantjatjara the song “Maralinga” written by Johnny Lovett over 40 years ago.

The Australian Government shows its support for regional artists and arts organisations to develop their artistic practice through the Regional Arts Fund, which has an emphasis on youth, the disadvantaged, remote and Indigenous communities.

Applicants are encouraged to produce works and experiences that will benefit their local communities. The funding targets activities that will have long term cultural, economic and social benefits for both individuals and communities. Many do this through the development of partnerships and cultural networks; by providing artists with professional development and employment opportunities, and by supporting arts and community development projects providing local communities with opportunities to participate in, and access cultural activities.

The Regional Arts Fund is administered on behalf of the Australian Government by Regional Arts Australia and its member organisations which include Country Arts SA.

The next funding round closes on 15 March 2016 for projects commencing after 1 July 2016. More information about the Regional Arts Fund is available from Country Arts SA on 08 8444 0400 or at www.countryarts.org.au.
