Tjutjuna (Ceduna) Aboriginal Arts and Culture Centre Forum and Open Day

Artists and community members in Ceduna attended a positive forum and open day at the Tjutjuna Aboriginal Arts & Culture Centre on Wednesday, 16 March 2016.

Representatives from the Ceduna Aboriginal Arts Corporation (CAC), Country Arts SA, Arts South Australia and Ananguku Arts collaborated to facilitate the day where Centre artists, staff, management and community stakeholders, groups and members were invited to sessions held in various formats.

People were invited throughout the day to yarn about their needs, aspirations and opportunities for the Art Centre and Aboriginal artists in the Far West.  They were encouraged to bring along ideas, have a say and to voice what mattered to them.  Up to 25 people attended the sessions aimed to explore how the Art Centre can lead as an arts and cultural resource and facilitator and, continue to be a viable, vibrant and relevant ‘place’ out in the community.

“Facilitating the forum was important for us and our other partner arts organisations Ananguku Arts and Arts South Australia,” said Steve Saffell, CEO, Country Arts SA.

“Our Aboriginal Engagement program supports Aboriginal artists and encourages more people to participate in art based activities. The forum enabled artists, staff and management to have a voice and for us to share more about services and support that we can provide to regional Aboriginal artists living in the remote Far West.”

Mick Haynes, CEO of Ceduna Aboriginal Corporation who was delighted by the outcomes of the consultation day said, “It is very important for everyone to work together; to continue to pro-actively work in the interest of the art centre to promote it as a place of artistic excellence, a safe work environment and a place where people can come to enjoy engaging with artists and the employees.”

Priority actions out of the consultation will be developed in upcoming planning sessions held by the artists, staff and management at the CAC as part of a new understanding of cooperation between all stakeholders.
