Do you have to forget the past to prove loyalty to the present?

Set against the backdrop of changing times and historical events significant for both indigenous and non-indigenous Australians, Slow Awakening tells the story of Cyril, a proud Ngarrindjeri man and Ivy, a head strong Wotjobaluk woman who first meet at a dance celebrating the ‘YES’ Referendum in 1967. After love, marriage and a lifetime of memories we meet them thirty five years on, when secrets kept hidden are about to be revealed….

Set in Dimboola (VIC) and Raukkan (SA) this tender new Australian play explores one family's search for meaning and identity. Slow Awakening is a moving, gentle and uplifting play by a gifted young writer.

Tracey Rigney is a Ngarrindjeri and Wotjobaluk woman from Victoria and South Australia. She is a storyteller, a published playwright, filmmaker, writer and director. She received a Centenary Medal in 2001 for outstanding service as an artist and playwright, and in 2003, the Victorian Aboriginal Young Achiever's Award.
