RECYCLED LIBRARY: Altered Books - various artists
Altered Books in Recent Australian Art: Recycled Library is a group exhibition of works by Australian artists that incorporate existing/found books as a major conceptual and creative element. An Artspace Mackay Touring Exhibition toured to SA in partnership with M&GSQ.
In Recycled Library, Altered Books the artists have used existing and found books as the raw material for their works, which are presented in forms including sculptures, wall based collages, artists’ books and photographs.
In the age of the ipad and the internet it may seem that the printed page is in danger of becoming irrelevant and will one day be seen as a curious ‘antique’. In this exhibition the artists explore the meaning and significance of ‘the book’ to society today through altering books into new forms.
This exhibition has brought together artists from all states and territories ranging in age from their 30’s to their 60’s, from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds including Indigenous Australians to Anglo/Celtic, German, Indian, Malaysian, Iranian and Czechoslovakian.
Artist Paul Hoban, who currently resides in Adelaide, has his work featured as part of this exhibition. Paul has exhibited widely in Australia and his work is held in collections in Australia, Japan, Spain and Argentina.
In contemporary society the image of ‘the book’ has continued to be used as a powerful motif by visual artists and its meaning has become more diverse and ambiguous. Many of the artists in the Recycled Library, Altered Books exhibition have used second hand books as a way of questioning the authority of the printed text, particularly as a way to record historical ‘fact’.
