Situated in a fragile environment reminiscent of the Flinders Ranges, Palmer produces drastic landscapes where you can sit on the Southern rocks and see the Murray in the distance and perhaps Lake Alexandrina and The Coorong. It is where the Palmer Sculpture Biennial is held which includes sculptors whose work is made in response to the landscape in which it is installed.
Hinterland includes artists’ working maquettes, artworks from the Palmer site, as well as photo documentation and a DVD projection, which illustrate the creative processes about how the works were produced for the Palmer Biennial, providing a rare and intriguing insight into the philosophy behind the works.
This exhibition features works by a range of artists including Sandy Elverd, Greg Johns,
Ted Jonsson and Gerry King.

Hinterland
Situated in a fragile environment reminiscent of the Flinders Ranges, Palmer produces drastic landscapes where you can sit on the southern rocks and see the Murray in the distance and perhaps Lake Alexandrina and the Coorong. It is where the Palmer Sculpture Biennale is held which includes sculptors whose work is made in response to the landscape in which it’s installed. Hinterland includes artists’ working drawings, maquettes and photo documentary imagery.
Hinterland offers a contemporary take on a long-standing tradition within Australian and elsewhere, of art linked to the land. It demonstrates strategies for using art to capture and communicate feelings and beliefs about senses of place, geological time, land degradation and conservation. Drawings and maquettes provide insights into thinking and technical processes. Hinterland also has significant potential to be used as a catalyst for creative writing.
