$124,894 of new regional arts funding provided to South Australian communities

7th July 2009
All Regions

Chair of Country Arts SA, Mr Steve Grieve recently announced that regional South Australian communities have been provided with $124,894 to support arts initiatives thanks to the Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund.

“In total of $124,894 has been allocated to 18 projects involving South Australian communities after the Minister for the Arts, Peter Garrett, announced the latest round from the Regional Arts Fund” he said.

“The opportunities presented by the Regional Arts Fund, are an extremely important way for communities and individuals to express their creativity and look at their world from a different perspective” said Mr Grieve.

“In addition, these grants provide an important economic stimulus for regional communities.  In the past, for every $1 of grant funding provided by Country Arts SA, an additional $3.10 is raised from other sources including other grant programs, local government contributions, business sponsorship and fundraising.”

Initiatives supported in the new round of funding include:
  • Blokes and their BBQ: An Artistic Interpretation - Artist and sculptor, Dave Lewis will host a series of workshops aimed at assisting the male population of wider Murray Bridge community transform the humble BBQ into a sculptural feature using recycled and readily available materials. Design, art and sculpture will tangle with the reinvention of burning meat.
  • Australian Ceramics Triennale 2009, Sydney - Recent graduate from the Jam Factory Contemporary Craft and Design Associateship Erin Lykos will attend the Australian Ceramics Triennale Sydney in July 2009. Following this experience Erin will conduct workshops in Copper Coast High Schools, passing on up to date knowledge and skills gained from the conference to students interested in careers in the arts.
The Regional Arts Fund assists community-based cultural development in regional, remote and isolated areas in Australia. The Fund aims to achieve sustainable cultural development by facilitating partnerships and networks, assisting the professional development and employment of regional artists, and by funding community projects.

Country Arts SA manages the Regional Arts Fund in South Australia on behalf of the Australian Government.  Assistance is available across all art forms for projects that encourage community participation in regional arts development.

The next funding round closes 15 August 2009, for projects which commence from 1 January 2010. More information about the Regional Arts Fund is available from Country Arts SA on 8444 0400.
