City of Whyalla Art Prize $25,000
Neil Haddon, TAS
"Portrait with Paperchains" Enamel and Oil Paint on Aluminium, 150 x 170 $9,625
"The more you try to erase me the more I appear" sings Thom Yorke.
I erase things - a black gloss panel, a pristine and austere black mirror set to with a Makita sander. There is evidence of the sander powering through layers of paint to an aluminium substrate leaving the once perfect enamel surface partially abraded. Difference in lustre, between gloss and matt varies, depending on your position in relation to the panel.
Onto this ground seemingly inconsequential remnants of the original source image are reinstated but they have been recoloured and transformed, and in doing, identifying links have been broken. - Neil Haddon
