Local Stages

Interested in creating and watching dynamic, innovative and contemporary performance in regional South Australia?  Catch the latest Local Stages workshop program or tour in your area.

Local Stages is a professional performance development and presentation program that currently operates in Mount Gambier and Pt Augusta.

The Main Objectives of Local Stages are to:

  • Develop relationships with regional artists.
  • Create opportunities for artists to access Country Arts SA theatres and resources.
  • Commission and produce innovative new work.
  • Create programs which develop professional practice.

Local Stages works with regionally based artists of any age who identify themselves as interested or working in performance … this can include outdoor performance, text-based theatre, self devised work, physical theatre, contemporary movement and dance, site based work, puppetry, visual theatre, performance art, theatre for young people, circus, contemporary performance, youth theatre and cabaret …

Partnerships, mentorships and projects are often developed with the regional based artist through the Creative Producer, Local Stages in-conjunction with a wide network of professionally based artists around Australia.

Local Stages also coordinates the Varcoe’s Foundry Residency in Mount Gambier – a comprehensive and well resourced performance based residency that provides artists an opportunity to develop professional, relevant and tour ready work to South Australian audiences.

In 2005 Steve returned to freelancing and covered broad territory as Creative Producer for the 2005 and 2006 Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Special Events Program Coordinator for the Adelaide Fringe 2006 along with creating works for Young Mermaids Guide to Planet Earth’s; Agender Project, “Crystal” for Riverland Youth Theatre and commenced development on a long term performance / video project “The Hulk” based on Simon Robb’s novel of the same name.

He was the recipient of the Australia Council’s 2005 Camden Head Community Cultural Development Residency and in 2006 he spent three months at the Hong Kong Fringe Club on an Asialink residency allowing him to witness a successful ongoing programming venture and its relationship with its community whilst extending his knowledge in contemporary performance, film and visual art.  In 2008 he was invited back to the Hong Kong Fringe Club to curate the Australia On Stage season as a part of their City Festival.

His extensive experience in regional and urban arts along with his work across the spectrum of the arts in management and the development of new theatre based works as a director, writer, designer, composer, dramaturg, and creative producer combined with his keen interest in the development of hybrid theatre works and installation has enabled him to collaborate with some of South Australia’s most recognised independent artists and companies.
